The History of Foundation As told by Fred Cavin – Founder

Circa January 1970 I was employed by Raymond International, Inc., and held the office of Northern California District Manager. And, at this time I determined that due to the revised seismic section of the Uniform Building Code the traditional Raymond “Step Tapered” piles were no longer marketable. The new seismic requirements had in my opinion ended an era, and at the same time opened a window of success for a modern, malleable goal oriented pile driving company. With this in mind I resigned my position with Raymond International, and set out to create that new dynamic pile driving company.

I enlisted three of my contemporaries as partners, Joe Hilton, Ray Rose, and Barney Murdock without whose help Foundation’s initial success would have been questionable. Each of us made an equal investment, and hammered out the details of our venture in the setting of our new office – the kitchen of my apartment in Castro Valley, California. With the use of our personal property for a construction yard Foundation was up, and running – hailing from Livermore, California. Hard work, and a commitment to our clients’ goals proved to be a potent combination as our company continued to grow.

In December 1976 Foundation purchased H.F. Lauritzen Company. The agreement of that purchase was crafted on a place mat at the The Brass Door restaurant in San Ramon, California. In January of 1977 Foundation’s Livermore yard, including the office, was moved to the old Lauritzen yard in Oakley, California – Foundation’s home to this day. Foundation’s successes have continued as each new challenge is met head-on. Foundation’s ownership, and leadership has been passed on to the next generation of aggressive construction professionals, although I do remain as Chairman Emeritus of the Board of Directors.
